What every freelance invoice needs

Clients pay faster when an invoice is unambiguous. At minimum, include:

Net 14 vs. Net 30, which should you use?

Net 14 gets you paid faster and is standard for individual freelancers and small clients. Net 30 is common when working with larger companies whose accounts payable runs on a monthly cycle, fighting it usually just delays things further. When in doubt, ask the client what their standard terms are before you send the first invoice, not after.

What to do about late payments

State your late policy on the invoice itself, before it's late, for example, "Payment due within 14 days. A 1.5% monthly fee applies to overdue balances." Most clients pay on time regardless, but having it in writing gives you leverage if they don't.
